Big Happy By Channel Islands

Surf Gear Editorial Team

A versatile, high-performance board that’s perfect for enhancing both stability and maneuverability in various wave conditions.

The Big Happy by Channel Islands is a surfboard that promises versatility and performance, and for the most part, it delivers. Designed to handle a variety of conditions, it quickly became my go-to board for those days when I wasn’t sure what the ocean had in store. Whether I was out on knee-high waves or pushing into overhead sets, the Big Happy managed to maintain speed and control, which is a tough balance to strike.

The wide, full outline makes paddling a breeze, even on smaller days, which is something I truly appreciated when the waves were scarce. However, while the extra width adds stability, it does make the board feel a bit sluggish during quick direction changes, particularly when compared to some of my more performance-oriented boards. I found that the slightly pulled-in tail and refined rails helped mitigate this, but it’s something to consider if you're looking for razor-sharp responsiveness.

In terms of construction, Channel Islands doesn’t disappoint. The board feels solid and durable without being overly heavy, which is crucial for long-term use. I’ve put it through some pretty harsh conditions, and it’s held up remarkably well. However, the trade-off here is that it’s not the lightest board in my quiver, so if you’re someone who prioritizes ultra-light boards, this might be a consideration.

Aesthetically, the Big Happy is a winner. Its clean, minimalist design is easy on the eyes and aligns perfectly with Channel Islands' reputation for stylish, functional boards. It’s the kind of board that looks just as good under your arm as it does in the water.

Overall, the Big Happy is a solid choice for surfers looking for a reliable, all-around board. It may not be the quickest on a dime, but its blend of stability, speed, and durability make it a worthwhile investment for any surfer’s quiver.
